Targeting specific age groups for book sales
Hi, Brian,
Brad Poulson suggested I join this group and post the question I sent to him about strategies to market my new book which targets a specific age group. I have a background in gerontology, and the midlife ("Boomer") generation is my specialty area and target group. My book is about spirituality and midlife women (The Spiritual Fitness Checkup for the 50-Something Woman, published by Healthy Life Press). Aside from the obvious strategy of searching out Boomer women Web sites (of which there are plenty), I wondered if you had other suggestions. Also, what's your opinion about paid advertising? I have an opportunity to purchase a 1/2-page ad in a national Christian magazine, but they want $500 for it. Is it wise to put out that kind of money to try to sell books? I have seen your post on "prospecting" for book customers. Lots of good ideas there. Thank you!

Hi Sharon:
As far as the ad goes, it is generally difficult to recoup your paid-advertising investment. Try this: find relevant associations (www.weddles.com) and contact the newsletter editor. Allow them to excerpt from your text in exchange for free advertising. I have done that for several of my clients. If that doesn't work, ask them to review your book.
