Recently, SPAN employed of one of the many resources it offers to our members and utilized the services of PR Newswire (click here for a list of SPAN Benefits from printing to insurance).

PR Newswire’s “PR Toolkit”, offered free to SPANpro members, helped us develop an effective press release to spread the word about our new social media web site (SPANnet.org) and an upcoming virtual tour of the community (SPANnet.org Free Virtual Tour Webinar).

In addition, PR Newswire’s excellent customer service instructed us on the use of their Web ReleasePlus (aka: WebMaxPlus) Service to broadcast our press release to over 5,000 news distribution web sites. This reasonably priced service allowed us to distribute our press release to news media outlets immediately (including Google and Yahoo News, the Street.com, Bizjournals.com and more), and is intended to give SPAN the additional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) benefits of “spider hits”, “Online and Search Views”, and “Release Postings” to drive web traffic to SPANnet.org.

For books related to newsworthy subjects and that rely heavily on internet distribution, this relatively inexpensive service could be a significant part of a viral, internet marketing campaign. In addition, anyone wanting to reference a published press release about their book as part of a wider marketing plan could benefit by using this service. I have a question about the publishers release date on a book.  I understand the reasons for preparing a launch, getting your presskit ready, picking an official publication date, etc.  But the POD publishers and the ebook converters (Kindle, Smashwords) post the book, put a publication date on it, within days.  This doesn't give me time to get reviewers lined up, get my press kit out, etc, and there it is online with a publication date six weeks earlier than it takes to get established in the distribution channels.

How do I handle that?

This is a good question, that illustrates some of the conflict that is arising with the advent of digital publishing.

If you can afford to ask the question again, while including as much background detail as you feel comfortable sharing, then

I would recommend asking the experts over in the SPAN's book marketing group,
