About Me - Personally
See what I do professionally. It's all intertwined.
About Me - Professionally
Hmmm…what do I do? Many things.

I'm a writer. My second novel is being edited. I have a nonfiction book out on self-publishing and I'm writing a memoir of my well-spent youth living on a sailboat. Professionally, that translates into working with writers to create excellent books, helping companies to establish in-house publishing divisions and educating writers through seminars and workshops.

I'm a Graphic Designer and MFA Design Educator. I'm a full-time design faculty member at an Arts University. I started Miami's oldest web design firm in 1995 and I'm still at it. My work is a little different: it's organic, mischievous, provocative. It's profoundly digital, but looks like its been locked in a box since the 1930's. The wacky flash stuff is always fun, but I also love setting up blogs and designing book covers. Call me if you need something that doesn't look like the stuff you see every day over and over, or if you have a design idea everyone tells you is impossible. I write my own code and create my own design, and consider them part of the same creative process.

I'm a marketer, but I don't make "beautiful lies" for mediocre clients. If you're authentic and have something of value to offer, I'd love to work with you. I've done a few Fortune 500s and plenty of Mom and Pops. Sometimes, I get called in to push the big consulting firms to deliver something beyond the canned solutions they can make more profit on.

I lived aboard cruising sailboats for 15 years and crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a wooden boat. I can solve problems with spit, chewing gum and twine.

I've played guitar (mostly acoustic and mostly jazz) since 1981, and have designed several successful instruments. I minored in jazz guitar and rarely perform, but I play every day. I've done marketing work for some of the world's finest instrument builders.

All of these influences are always in play regardless of what kind of problem I'm engaging with.

Why Flash Is Not Dead and What That Means for Publishers

Posted on November 14, 2011 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

Flash Is Not Dead Flash has been one of my favorite tools for over a decade so I was concerned when Adobe announced  it will no longer continue to develop its Flash Player plug-in for mobile browsers. Flash developers are up in arms. Adobe’s stock price has fallen. ZDNet says …

A World Without Borders - The End of the Bookstore

Posted on July 29, 2011 at 2:28pm 3 Comments

In the wake of Borders’ bankruptcy, I’ve read various theories about what led to the bookseller’s demise. Monday morning quarterbacking inevitably follows someone else’s failure; it’s easy to stand at the curb and analyze the tire tracks, but Borders’ crash had little to do with pilot error. In the span of a few years, books changed, publishing changed, printing changed and…

Self-Publishing? Get Real

Posted on November 26, 2010 at 2:38pm 1 Comment

There are plenty of good reasons to self-publish, but not all are profit-oriented or even rational. Before you invest in your book, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself some serious questions.

Why did I write my book?

If the answer is, “I don’t really know. I had a story inside me and it just had to come out,” you’re the sincerest kind of writer, but you may not have a good product upon which to build a publishing… Continue

Dave,

I've added a few of my own thoughts to the Cover Design Best Practices thread, and as I am much more of a fine artist then cover design pro, I wanted to invite you, again, to share your thoughts, or criticisms, on my posts.

Thank you, either way, for your time.

Sincerely,
